Many councils are reaping the benefits of adopting new technologies and digital systems across all areas of their work. Not only are there efficiencies to be made, customers increasingly expect services to be available online and to be able to engage with their council through different channels such as social media. Equally, democratic engagement can be strengthened by bringing decision-making online and getting citizens involved in a way that fits around their lives.
This award will recognise efforts by councillors to allow all residents to be able to make the most of this drive towards digital. This may be by promoting digital inclusion, ensuring full broadband coverage and offering digital skills training, or it may also encompass work that pioneered responsible practices in personal data protection and privacy, and commitments to council information being in “open data” format to increase transparency.
The winner of this award will have either:
- Have contributed to the adoption of new technology within the council, including IT systems, communication and collaboration tools and data sharing systems
- Be a digital inclusion champion, leading projects that improve digital infrastructure and education
- Actively seek out and implement new technological solutions to the council’s challenges, such as smart energy and lighting, digital signage and electric vehicles.
