Resilient Places January update

Dear all,

Thank you for signing up to LGiU’s Resilient Places policy theme.

Developing resilient places is at the heart of what local government does. It is a wide-ranging remit, which includes building strong communities, with reliable infrastructure and open, dynamic governance.

We’ve got some key questions that we’d like to address in 2016, but we want the research and activities to be designed around you. We’ll be in touch throughout the year to keep you up to speed and involved, but for now it would be great if you could take a couple of minutes to tell us what matters most to you in terms of building resilient places.

  1. What is the biggest challenge to resilience in your area?
  2. How do we connect the different strands that make a place resilient, including local economy, community networks, infrastructure and crisis response?

So far we have:

  • Published commentary on the management of recent flooding in the north of England The Governance of Flooding in England is a Mess.
  • Published two papers, 21st Century Resilience  and Resilience in Practice  which outline some of our ideas and the ways we think local government should approach resilience.
  • Helped to deliver RainGain, an EU funded project to investigate enhanced flood management. It led to this paper: Managing Floods.
  • Started to set up a London Resilience Network, bringing together representatives from nearby authorities to share ideas, challenges and lessons.
