Well we certainly picked an interesting, not to say historic day, to hold the annual local government APPG summer reception.
As it turned out, Parliament was very definitely the place to be on Monday 11th July. Amidst the high drama caused by Andrea Leadsom’s withdrawal from the Conservative leadership race, effectively handing the premiership to Theresa May, LGiU and Portman Group welcomed council leaders, MPs and other friends and colleagues to the Pavilion Terrace.
Heather Wheeler MP, Chair of the Local Government APPG welcomed guests. Our keynote speaker was Greg Clark MP, in what was, unbeknownst everyone including him, his last official engagement as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
We launched our new report – Building a vibrant night time economy, produced with support from Portman Group – which looks at steps that local authorities can take to develop successful, diverse and safe after-hours economies not solely based on alcohol. Guests also heard from Martin Narey, Chair of Portman Group, Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of LGiU and LGiU’s Chair Cllr Michael Payne.
The weather and the beautiful setting contributed to an enjoyable evening as the Thames flowed effortlessly past.
