In a recent survey of LGiU Policy Network members, policy leads were asked about the form and function of their policy teams. We asked how policy teams were organised, what they did, what they were good at and what they wished they did better.

I’m not surprised that incorporating user voice is there, but it’s a little curious that people think they could do better at communicating performance – internally and externally – given that’s something which there was a big emphasis on over the years of Best Value.

      Oh, where are the best value performance plans of yesteryear? Much loved but little read, even in then communicating performance interally and externally was a will ‘o the wisp that eluded us. And now, the code of practice on publicity states a policy that budget cuts are driving into practice.

      Beyond that, I suspect that as ever, the dissatisfaction is more about the lack of communication from target audiences that it is about dissatisfaction with messages to them. The trap of blaming our readers rather than us writers is treacherous as it is familiar.
