LGiU members

Our members are councils from across the country and other organisations that work with local communities and deliver public services.

Our policy experts focus on the complex and ever changing challenges that local government must keep on top of and deliver a timely and responsive programme of work for all our member organisations.

Benefits of membership

Website and briefings

All employees and councillors of member organisations are entitled to register on our website to view our policy briefings.

Our 300 briefings per year cover a wide range of policy issues affecting local government. On key issues, such as the Budget, Queen’s Speech and the Comprehensive Spending Review we ensure that ‘on-the-day’ briefings are published, followed up with more indepth analysis.

All LGiU members can access:

  • Essential policy briefings
  • Steer policy briefings (Skills, training, environment, economy and regeneration)
  • Weekly round-up
  • CSN policy briefings (Children’s Services Network)

Members with a ‘plus’ level of membership also receive:

  • Policy Intelligence Briefings (detailed analysis and argument of key policy issues on thematic basis)
  • Horizon Scanning Briefings (medium term trends and emerging thinking on a policy theme, assessing the impact on future operational activities and political decisions)
  • Stakeholder Perspective Briefings (bring together the viewpoints of different partners).

Events, consultants and training

All LGiU members are entitled to the member discount rate on:

Research publications, good practice guides, think pieces

Our think-pieces and research publications stimulate thinking and influence local government policy and practice. Recent reports include:

Policy development

The LGiU is a member driven organisation. Our network of members has a very strong voice in the development and delivery of our innovative and influential policy work.

We work with local and national policy makers to ensure that localism is at the heart of public policy. LGiU provides the secretariat to the Local Government All Party Group and regularly brings together local leaders with MPs and Ministers to ensure that localism is high on the national agenda.

C’llr magazine and C’llr Awards

The LGiU’s unique bi-monthly magazine, c’llr is for and about the role of elected members. We showcase the work of councillors up and down the country alongside features on key figures in the local government world, policy direction and comment. Above all it is a good read and delivered to all our member organisations.

We recently held the second annual C’llr achievement awards. These are the only awards that acknowledge and show appreciation for the hard work of councillors across the country. Categories include Community Champion of the Year, New Councillor of the Year and Leader of the Year.

LGiU governance

The LGiU is a member led body and all member organisations are invited to participate in our governance, through our Members Assembly and the Executive Board.
